Week 3-4
This project has largely been on the back burner, as I have had many other college projects to work on recently. However over the last few weeks I have created a large number of the sprites and some background details (including grass) and some test level tiles. I wanted a large variety to not make the floors of levels look similar. This ends up being a very long process. Taking many days making tons of variants for each sprite.
I found when initially working on the tiles it was quite difficult to get a style working, I then decided to look into some of my inspirations levels to see how the tiles are mapped out. I wish I would have done this earlier as it would’ve saved some time experimenting. I found myself getting better with the sprites as I went, with the final level in particular being my best work by far.
I do feel this makes the earlier sprites look a little bit worse in comparison however they do also match the style and I feel recreating previous tiles would be a major waste of time as I am already slightly behind schedule. I think the fact that I have created all these myself and not sourced any has allowed for all of my game to maintain a consistent art style I plan to create as many assets myself as possible to make this project feel distinctly “me”.
